PHX to ORD and PHX to AMS network degradation

Incident Report for HorizonIQ

Postmortem

All services related to this event have now been restored.

This morning we experienced two separate issues that occurred within the same timeframe:

  1. Backbone Provider Incident (Phoenix)e

One of our backbone providers experienced a failure that impacted redundant backbone connectivity in Phoenix. This affected private network paths between Phoenix and other locations, including Chicago and Amsterdam. The provider restored service at approximately 06:58 AM CST, at which point normal connectivity resumed.

2. Amsterdam Public Network Event

Around the same time, we experienced a separate issue affecting public connectivity in our Amsterdam environment. This was caused by a network control-plane condition that resulted in loss of public routing from the site. Engineering isolated the condition and restored service at approximately 07:00 AM CST.

Impact

Customers with connectivity between Phoenix and other locations, as well as some public connectivity in Amsterdam, may have experienced loss of connectivity or degraded performance during the incident window.

Resolution

Both issues have been resolved and services are operating normally. Engineering continues to review the events with our providers and internally to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Investigating

An ISP that provides part of our backbone connectivity between locations is currently experiencing an issue. This is affecting redundant backbone paths between PHX and ORD at the same time. As a result, customers with traffic between PHX and ORD or PHX and AMS may experience degraded performance.
